Sound is a vibration or disturbance that travel through any medium by transferring energy from one particle to other and can be heard when it reaches a person's or animal's ear.

For example when an object vibrates it transfers its energy to the surrounding particles and makes them to vibrate. These particles again collide with the other particles making them to vibrate by transferring energy and so on. like-wise the vibrations are transferred from one particle to other through any medium. Sound cannot travel through vacuum because vacuum does not contain particles to act as medium. Sound travels only through a medium such as water, air and solid. Sound is transmitted through air and liquid as longitudinal waves but through solid it is transmitted as both longitudinal and transverse waves.
