The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950.

The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition towards becoming an independent republic.

26 th January was the day before the Independence when at the Lahore Session the Congress first declared of Poorna Swaraj or Complete Independence.

It was celebrated as the Independence Day till 15th August 1947.

After 1947,15th August was celebrated as Independence Day and :

26th August for its special historical significance was celebrated as the Republic Day.

The Constitution of India came into effect on this day 26th January in 1950.

That's why it is celebrated as the Republic Day
