Light travels much faster than sound (almost 3 × 100000000 m/s in air). In fact nothing travels faster than light.

We must have noticed that in the rainy season the sound of thunder is heard much later than the flash of lightning is seen. This happens because it takes nearly negligible time for the light to reach us, while sound takes much more time.

In general, sound travel slowest in gases, faster in liquids and fastest in solids. The diagram given below shows the speed of sound in different mediums at 0°C

Medium | Speed of Sound

_______________________________

Gases |

Air | 332 m/s

Carbon dioxide | 260 m/s

Hydrogen | 1270 m/s

_______________________________

Liquids |

Alcohol | 1210 m/s

Turpentine | 1325 m/s

Water | 1450 m/s

_______________________________

Solids |

Copper | 3560 m/s

Glass | 5500 m/s
