Male reproductive cells, or gametes, are sperm. The word "gamete" means "half of a whole." A human embryo is formed when sperm meets a female gamete, or egg.
Scientists can usually recognize the following three sections of a sperm cell under a microscope:
The crowning glory
- The chromatin material that builds the chromosomes is found in the sperm head.
- Human sperm and egg cells both have 23 chromosomes in most cases. The sperm and egg join to form a 46-chromosome embryo.
- A cap, known as an acrosome, covers the sperm's head. Proteins in the acrosome assist sperm in penetrating an egg's outer shell.
The central area
- Energy-producing mitochondria are located in the sperm's middle. The energy needed for the sperm cell to travel is provided by these specialized components.
The back of the neck
- The sperm tail, also known as the flagellum, allows the sperm to travel. The sperm's tail drives them forward to fertilize an egg.
