Question:

What is sphygmomanometer?

Answer:

Sphygmomanometer is the instrument which is used to measure the blood-pressure of a person. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit (the mercury manometer, or aneroid gauge), and a mechanism for inflation( pressed manually.) We wrap the inflatable cuff around a person's hand and press the mechanism several times. On each pressing on the mechanism the inflatable cuff gets more tightly wrapped around the persons hand. After that, whn we stop pressing the mechanism then n air gets passed and the hands presented inside the manometer moves and indicates a reading which is said to be the blood pressure of the person. The normal blood pressure for human being is 120/80 mmHg.

  • Sphygmomanometer is a device used to determine the blood pressure of a person

  • An ideal adult has a blood pressure 120/80 mm of Hg

  • 120 refers to the number of constrictions of arteries

  • On the other hand,80 refers to venular contractions

  • More or less contractions indicate abnormalities in the heart

Functioning

  • The region of blood vessels is covered with a sheet

  • A rubber cork is pressed repeatedly to test the pressure

  • As a result of continuous pressing, the mercury level in the gauge rises indicating the blood pressure
