Reasons that led to the decline of Indian textiles:
- Industrial groups pressurised the gvernment to impose import duties on cotton textiles.
- British manufacturers started to sell cheap cotton goods in India as well.
Handloom production did not completely die in India:
- Famines did not affect the sale of Banarasi or Baluchari saris.
- Mills could not imitiate specialised weavers.
- Saris with woven borders, famous lungis, and handkerchiefs of Madras, could not easily displaced by mill production.
