Static friction acts when a body is at rest or in the verge of motion.

Have you ever noticed that it is difficult to move a table at rest than which is already moving? More force is required to move bodies at rest than moving is due to static friction of the body.

☛ Static friction is a type of friction force that acts on a body when there is no relative motion between the object and the surface.

So, it can act even when the body is in motion but there should be no relative motion.

☛ But as soon as body comes in relative motion static friction stops acting and now the kinetic friction comes in picture.

☛ Always remember static friction value changes with situation i.e , the value of static friction varies from 0 (zero) to maximum value.

☛ This is in contrast to kinetic friction whose value is fixed (which is equal to product of coefficient of kinetic friction and normal force).
