In chemistry, stationary phase is one of the two phases commonly discussed in chromatography; the stationary and the mobile phase. It is actually uniform adsorbent phase which can be solid or liquid and it selectively absorbs the components of the material to be separated or under observation. For example, in paper chromatography, stationary phase is a paper strip and in thin layer chromatography, a thin layer cell is a stationary phase.

In biology, stationary phase is one of the phases of bacterial growth in which the size of bacterial population remains same or constant that is the number of cells dividing is equal to the number of cells dying. In this phase, the rate of growth of bacterial cells is equal to the rate of bacterial cells dying.
