Stratified Squamous Epithelium- In the cuboidal or columner shaped this is the innermost layer of cells.
- They divide to form cells of outer layer in the epithelium.
- The middle layer is made up of polygonal cells.
- Outermost cell layer are in scale like flat cells.
- They are very rigid and get mechanical support due presence of desmosomes.
They are classified on the basis of presence of Keratin Protein-
1. Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium- Those cells are dead and unnucleated due to presence of Keratin Protein.Epidermis of skin and it's derivatives are example of it.
Examples- Hair, Horn, Scales, Feathers, Hooves etc.
2. Non Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium-Those cells are nucleated, living and keratin is present on it.
Examples- Cornea of eye, Inner linings of cheeks, lips, hard palate etc.
