A place is classified as a subcontinent when it is a part of a continent but is considered either geographically or politically as an independent entity or it is smaller than a continent.
Generally, a subcontinent is split from the rest of the continent by something like a mountain range or by tectonic plates.
The common phrase " the subcontinent" used on its own usually means the Indian Subcontinent of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh ,Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan & Sri Lanka).
Further, India is surrounded by three sides of water 1) Bay of Bengal 2) Arabian Sea and 3) Indian ocean.
That's why India is called Subcontinent.
