CHANGE OF SOLID INTO GAS - SUBLIMATION

At normal pressure, most solids on heating first change into liquid state, however, some solids which have high tendency to go into gaseous (vapour) state, directly change into vapour state on heating. This phenomenon is called SUBLIMATION.

Sublimation is transition of a substance from solid to gaseous (vapour) state without passing through the intermolecular liquid state.

The reverse process of sublimation is called desublimation or deposition.

Some examples of solids which undergo sublimation are iodine, camphor, naphthalene, solid carbon dioxide etc.

The process of Sublimation is employed to separate and purify substances which sublime on heating from non-volatile impurities.
