Subsidiary alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley which was imposed on most of the kingdoms and States so that they could be annexing them would become a cake walk for the Britishers.
In this policy, the kings were not supposed to have their independent armies. They were to be protected by the
East India Company's army. In turn,the king was ought to pay a huge amount of money to the Company for the service they were providing.
And if they failed to do so,a part of their territory would be taken away as penalty.
For example; A subsidiary alliance was imposed on Awadh in 1801 and it was taken away by the Company in 1856 because the Nawab failed to pay the money.
