In this identity we find the value of one variable and we put it in other.

eg. we are given two equations,

x-2y=7 -(i)

or x=7-2y -(iii)

x-y=10 -(ii)

now we substitute value of (iii) in (ii) we get, 7-2y-y=10

Now solve it further.
