The reaction in which one hydrogen atoms of a hydrocarbon are replaced by some other atoms is called SUBSTITUTION REACTION..

Example : Methane reacts with chlorine in the presence of sunlight to form chloromethane and hydrogen chloride...
=>CH4 +Cl2 ---------> CH3Cl + HCl..
In this reaction ,one H atom of methane has been substituted by Cl atom ,converting CH4 into CH3Cl..
