A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solids are dispersed in liquids. The solute particles in suspension do not dissolve but remain suspended throughout the medium. For example Paints, Muddy water chalk water mixtures etc.

  • The heterogeneous mixtures in which the components or constituents are present in more than one phase are of two types:- Suspension and Colloidal solutions.

  • Suspension may be defined as a heterogeneous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it. They settle as precipitate if the suspension is left undisturbed for sometime.

Properties of suspension

1) A Suspension is of particle nature. These are two phases. The solid particles represent one phase while the liquid in which these are suspended or distributed forms the other phase.

2) Particles size in a suspension is more than 100nm ( 10 ^-7m).

3) Particles can be seen by the naked eye and also under the microscope.
