The junction where one neuron joins another neuron is called synapse. The synapse is a narrow gap between two adjacent neurons which contains chemicals or neurotransmitters for nerve transmission. Transmission of nerve impulses between two neurons takes place at the synapse . It is the area of contact between Axon terminal of one neuron and the Dendrite terminal of the next neuron . Synapses actually act like one way valves . This is because the chemical substance is present only on one side of the gap .
