Synapsis is the phenomenon where pairing of two homologous chromosome occur during the process of meiosis.

It takes place during the prophase I of the meiosis process.

This process allows matching up of homologous chromosome pairs prior to the segregation which occurs during the later part of the phase.

The synapsis process occurs during only meiosis and doesn’t occur in mitosis though mitosis also has prophase phase.
