Tailing of mercury (a metal) is its innate property. Lets see how? Put some liquid mercury on a glass surface and you will find a oval shaped drop on glass of it. Now make it to move some where on the surface but not down to it. During when its moving you will find that the drop has got one tail which disappear soon as the drop moved some forth. This phenomenon of making tail during its gentle motion is called tailing of mercury.
Reason for this mercury atoms has a weaker interatomic cohesive force which goes on increase as the distance between the molecules increases upto a certain range of distance that is minus fifteenth power of ten.
This lead mercury to make tail during motion.
It can be removed by adding some impurities in it such as other metal.

When ozone is passed through mercury, it loses its meniscus and sticks to the glass due to the formation of mercurous oxide. This is called tailing of mercury. The meniscus can be restored by shaking it with water.
