Thanjavur painting is a classical South Indian painting style, which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur (anglicized as Tanjore) and spread across the adjoining and geographically contiguous Tamil country.

Tanjore paintings or Thanjavur paintings have been popular from 16th century during the Marathas invasion to Southern india. Most of the temples in South India have pictures of gods and goddess which are Tanjore paintings. It’s believed tanjore paintings started from Thanjavur a small town in Tamil Nadu and hence the name. Thanjavur district is quite popular for it’s toys and crafts.
