Why did the blacksmith told Franz " Don't go so fast, bub; you will get to your school in plenty of time!"

In the story, "The Last Lesson", the author Alphonse Daudet describes how a school boy named Franz goes to school. When Franz was on his way to school, he noticed the news on the walls and was thinking about it.
There was a blacksmith who watched Franz, slowly walking and commented not to go fast as there was a plenty of time to school. Franz realised that the blacksmith was making fun of him and he hurried to school.
The blacksmith who was already reading the bulletin told Franz that he would reach in plenty of time as he will reach his school daily but now onwards he couldn't learn his mother tongue French. This was the sadness & regretful sentence to Franz as he don't know about the imposing of German language to his school and so he was still casual in his attitude towards school, studying. And see now,the
situation when he will not have access to learn his language. When he has no time left to learn French. The blacksmith could feel that pain too.And knew well in advance that when Franz will reach school he too will come to know about the bulletin and he will also regret why could he not reach a bit early to take his very last lesson in French and why was he not attentive and sincere before to have learnt it.
