Once fed into the TCA cycle, acetyl CoA is converted into carbon dioxideand energy. The TCA cycle consists of eight steps catalyzed by eight different enzymes (see Figure). The cycle is initiated (1) when acetyl CoA reacts with the compound oxaloacetate to form citrate and to release coenzyme A (CoA-SH).

Dear Student,
◆ TCA cycle -
- TCA cycle is common pathway for oxidation of carbohydrates, proteins & fatty acids.
- It is also known as Citric Acid cycle or Krebs cycle.
- It takes place in mitochondria.
TCA cycle consist of 8 major steps.
# Steps in TCA cycle -
- Formation of Citric acid.
- Formation of Isocitric acid.
- Oxidation of Isocitric acid to α-Ketoglutarate.
- Oxidation of α-Ketoglutarate to Succinyl-CoA.
- Conversion of Succinyl-CoA to Succinic acid.
- Oxidation of Succinic acid to Fumarric acid.
- Hydration of fumaric acid to malic acid.
- Oxidation of malic acid to oxaloacetic acid.
Thanks dear. Hope this helps you..
