John Stuart Mill distrusted the idea of having a government directed education. He felt that the government of the day was nominally democratic but actually it did not represent the people at large. He said that we should leave the work of directing education to other bodies, parents, educationalists or local authorities. So in 1859 he opposed the national curriculum.
