The mixture of NaNO2 and dil. HCl on addition to different kinds of amine forms different class of compounds.

  1. The mixture on reacting with a primary aliphatic amine produces an alcohol.In the case of ethyl amine, ethanol is produced.
  2. The mixture on reaction with primary aromatic amine produces the chloride diazonium salt of the corresponding amine.In case of Aniline , benzene diazonium chloride is produced.
  3. The mixture on reacting with any secondary amine produces a nitosamine . In this case of diethyl amine , diethyl nitosamine is produced.
