I think that the name originates from Raja Dhilu or Dilu, a king of Mauryan Dynasty who reigned in the first century B.C. and named the city after himself. The various names by which it has been known (Dilhika, Delhi, Dilli, and Dhilli) have been corruptions of the king’s name.
