Amnesty International is the world's largest human rights organization. Amnesty has created a world wide movement with a mission to prevent and stop grave violations of human rights, like the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom on conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination. We also work to protect and promote all the human rights that are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Amnesty International is independent from all forms of governments and political ideologies, and all economic and religious interests. We don't support a specific political system or share the political opinions of the people we protect. All of our actions are based on well-researched facts and serve one purpose: to protect the human rights of those who can't protect themselves.
Today, there are over 1.5 million members of Amnesty International in more than 150 countries and territories, and more than 4,000 active local and campus chapters working to defend human rights. We believe that the protection of the individual rights is essential to the preservation of world peace and human diginity. In 1977, Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in support of Human Rights.
Amnesty International is a worldwide federation based at our International Secretariat in London. The Secretariat conducts research on human rights conditions in every country of the world. When an issue or individual case of abuse is identified for action, the Secretariat distributes information to the national sections(like Amnesty International USA), who campaign through letter writing, lobbying, media work, events, and lots of other tactics. Amnesty is predicated on the notion that each one of us can make a difference. And when we act together, we can change the world, one case at a time.
SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1961, MORE THAN 40,000 PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE HAVE BEEN HELPED BY AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL. PLEASE THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR EFFORTS COULD MEAN TO PEOPLE FACING REAL OPPRESSION, BRUTATLITY, AND FEAR.
Hope my answer helps you.
