Hey there !

A direct democracy or pure democracy is a form of government wherein the citizens have a direct say in the formulation of laws and issues that affect them while a representative democracy is a form of government wherein its citizens vote for or elect a representative to represent them in Congress or the Senate.

Direct democracy was first practiced in ancient Greek period where people could directly participate in decision making and political affairs of the state, however today direct democracy is not possible because of the population.

As a result, we have representative democracy, the world “representative” denotes that since it is not possible to directly participate in politics, people from each and every region elect their own representative or a leader who is accountable to the people since he/she represents their needs, demands and aspirations. On the other hand the term “democracy” here also denotes that when people elect their representative, they have the power to overthrow the govt as well because democracy is based on people's sovereign power.
