I would describe the internet as follows.
A lot of computers connected between them.
A free community for exchange of ideas.
Everyone can write whatever he want, but like real life it is up to us to evaluate the usefulness of the information we receive and classify it as good or bad.
A mean for information, entertainment and knowledge.
I suppose you do not want to get into techical stuff.
The above are a rough idea of what to say to your kid or grandfather :)
