Actually, almost all of it is true and was recorded by historical witnesses of the day. She really did allege to receive visions and interior locutions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. She really did claim that these persons instructed her to rally support for the French Dauphin Charles VII and recover France from English domination.

This is what happened. This peasant girl of Domrémy-la-Pucelle managed to convince Charles VII and the court clergy that she was telling the truth. At her first audience with the Dauphin, Charles even disguised one of his courtiers as himself in attempt to humiliate the peasant. Attempting to see if God would tell Joan that the person presented before her was not actually the the person to which her ‘voices’ instructed to restore the French crown. Somehow the girl was able to not only tell that the Dauphin’s courtier was not only Charles, but was able to pick the real Charles out of the assembled crowd. The assembly was astounded. Note bene that in those days where mass communications and photography were not yet things, and as such it wold have been highly unlikely that a peasant would have been able to identify such a highly-removed head of state. She was illiterate as well.
