Anne feels the eight of them in the annex are a patch of blue sky surrounded by the black clouds. Anne is starting to get depressed of her family's chances of survival during the war. She alternates between imagining what her future will be like and fearing that she and her family will be discovered anytime. The image of blue sky suggest freedom. The dark clouds signifies the oppress ions and restrictions of the Jews. These dark clouds  are covering the sky, suffocating Anne and the other inhabitants of the annex.
