Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful. This practice is considered exploitative by many international organisations.

Hi

According to the International Labor Organization, child labor refers to work that is performed by anyone under the age of 17. For the work to be considered child labor, it must be:

1) dangerous to the moral, social, physical, or mental development of a child.

2)a hindrance to a child's right to education. This includes by denying a child the opportunity to attend school or interfering with a child's ability to focus on lesson content (work can leave little time to focus on homework).

The realities of child labor are often more extreme than the above definition. Children who work are often isolated from their families. They often work in dangerous conditions and receive few breaks and low pay. Typically, they receive little protection from the dangerous elements to which they are exposed. In other words, child labor around the world is very different than the chores many children perform at home for spending money.

Poverty and lack of social security are the main causes of child labour. The increasing gap between the rich and the poor, privatization of basic services and the neo-liberal economic policies are causes major sections of the population out of employment and without basic needs. This adversely affects children more than any other group. Entry of multi-national corporations into industry without proper mechanisms to hold them accountable has lead to the use of child labour. Lack of quality universal education has also contributed to children dropping out of school and entering the labour force. A major concern is that the actual number of child labourers goes un-detected. Laws that are meant to protect children from hazardous labour are ineffective and not implemented correctly.
