Precipitant. Unlike sodium hydroxide, the hydroxides of most transition metals are insoluble, and therefore sodium hydroxide can be used to precipitate transition metal hydroxides. The following colours are observed:blue-copper, green-iron(II),yellow/brown-iron(III).
