Wide band gap semiconductors such as TiO2 (3.0 eV) are white because they absorb only in the UV. Fe2O3 has a band gap of 2.2 eV and thus absorbs light with λ < 560 nm. It thus appears reddish-orange (the colors of light reflected from Fe2O3) because it absorbs yellow, green, blue, and violet light.
