what is the contribution of copernicus in the philosophy of science?
Answers
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a devoted believer in Aristotelian physics, and is even referred to by Koestler as the ‘last of the Aristotelians’.
Some contributions of Copernicus:
- He introduced the heliocentric model of the solar system. Before, the earth had been believed to be the center.
- He stated that the seasons, the sun's rise and fall each day,the planetary movement, and the movement of the stars were all caused by earth's rotations.
- He established the orbit of the planets around the sun.
Some of the contributions of Copernicus in the philosophy of science are :
- Heliocentric theory of the universe:
According to this theory, the Sun is at the centre of the solar system, and the Earth and the other planets revolves in the fixed orbits around the Sun.
- Changing the theory of gravity:
"Heavy matter attracts smaller matter and is attracted to equally heavy matter due to the gravitational force," he clarified the concept of gravity as an attraction force held by matter.
- Order of alignment of planets in the solar system:
The Sun is an immovable sphere around which plants are aligned in the following order: Mercury- Venus- Earth- Mars- Jupiter- Saturn- Uranus- Neptune- Pluto. The moon revolves around the planets.
- For his important philosophy in science and astronomy, Nicolaus Copernicus came to be called the "Father of Modern Astronomy".
