philosophers like John Locke, Jean Jacques Roseau and Charles Montesquieu played a great part in starting the French revolution. John Locke wrote in his book "TWO TREATISES OF GOVERNMENT"sought to refute the absolute right and power of monarch and the doctrine of divine .
Roseau carried this idea forward and proposed a form of government based on social contract between the people and their representatives ( in his book The social contract)
moreover the division of power within the government between legislative executive and judiciary was proposed by Charles Montesquieu in his book "the spirit of laws"
these ideas of philosophers and thinkers were discussed intensively in salons and coffee houses and spread among people through books and newspapers.
hope this helps
