Normal erythropoiesis occurs in bone marrow and is under the control of the hormone erythropoietin (produced by the kidney) and other growth factors and cytokines (Chapters 4 and 5). 7,8. When erythropoiesis is effective, bone marrow is able to produce functional RBCs that replace the daily loss of RBCs.
