Rock salt (NaCl) is ionic crystalline compound having Na+ and Cl- ions. Each Na+ ion is surrounded by 6 Cl- ions and vice versa. Coordination number for an ion is the number of oppositely charged ions around it. So, it is 6. NaCl has fcc structure, each sodium ion is surrounded by 6 chlorine ions. Hence, coordination number of both Na+ and Cl- is 6.

Answer:

Rock salt, i.e. NaCl type structure has 6:6 coordination number.

Thus, in NaCl crystal, each Na+ ion is surrounded by 6 Cl- ions and each Cl- is surrounded by 6Na+ ions.
