imbibition is the phenomenon in which the dead or the living plant cell absorb water by process of surface attraction (due to the presence of cellulose and proteins which are hydrophilic in nature)

Imbibition:

 It is a special type of diffusion when water is absorbed by solids causing them to enormously increase in volume. E.g., absorption of water by seeds and dry wood.

 Seedlings emerge out of soil into the open due to imbibition.

 Two conditions are necessary for imbibition to take place:

• Water potential gradient between surface of absorption (E.g. Seeds) and water imbibed.

• Affinity between absorbent and the imbibed liquid (water).

Note: Dry seeds have highly negative water potential. When these seeds are placed in water, a steep water potential gradient is established. This allows rapid movement of water to surface of seeds.
