In the following reaction, compound Q is obtained from compound P via an ionic intermediate.
P + -----(conc. H₂SO₄) ---> Q ( A colored compound)
what is the degree of unsaturation of Q ?
solution : this is example of elimination reaction of alcohol.
see figure, here after reaction clearly shown how compound Q is formed.
now we have to find the degree of unsaturation of compound Q.
degree of unsaturation also known as double bond equivalent. it can be found by using formula, DoU = (2C + 2 + N - X - H)/2
here C = no of C - atoms
N = no of N atoms
X = no of halogens ( F, Cl, Br etc...)
H = no of H - atoms
here, C = 25 , N = 0, X = 0 , H = 16
so, DoU = (2 × 25 + 2 - 16)/2 = 18
Therefore degree of unsaturation of Compound Q is 18
