Soaps-

1. Soaps are sodium or magnesium salts of long chained carboxylic acids

2.These react with hard water to produce scum

3.They do not produce foam with hard water

Detergents-

1. Detergents are ammonium or sulphonate salts of long chained carboxylic acids

2.They do not react with hard water at all

3.These produce foam with hard water as well as soft water
