A are often confused with each other, while they are two very different entities which need to be taken care of while referring to. We are going to take you through the basic of both these terms, to tell you what they mean in very simple terminology.


A two terminal device which maintains a fixed voltage known as the voltage source. It has the same potential difference across its terminals. The ideal voltage source maintains a fixed voltage, and zero internal resistance. However, there can’t be an ideal physical voltage source. It is not possible for any voltage source to be able to provide unlimited current, and a voltage is designed to provide sufficient amount of current which is required in the circuit. These voltage sources include power systems, generators, batteries etc.


On the other hand, in an electronic circuit is provided with current irrespective of the voltage across it, it is known as current source. The internal resistance of an ideal current source, as opposed to a voltage source, is infinite. A current source is supposed to support any amount of potential difference across its terminals, and supply the same amount of current into the nodes it is connected to. No physical current source is ideal, just as ideal voltage sources. It is a no-brainer that any ideal current source would supply unlimited power, thus becoming an unlimited source of energy which is not possible in reality. Current sources are Zener diode current source, LED current source, etc.
