Apartheid was also much more rigid in that it had multiple official races vs just white/colored in the US. In SA there was White, Colored (mixed race in theory but decisions about it were arbitrary in practice), Black, and Indian (a small population of Indian descent).

Segregation in the US varied a lot from place to place and only in some sectors was it official government policy. In many cases it was just that businesses decided to segregate or not serve non-whites. Part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act banned racial discrimination in places of public accommodation (businesses open to the public).

Segregation

Segregation has been around for many years long before 1948, actually as soon as the Europeans landed in the Cape . The felt superior to the black , indigenous people and therefore took their land and resources. this lead to the 1913 land act which was a law giving whites 87percentage of the land ownership.so inotherwords segregation is just the racist ideas people had a separation between different races . It lasted all over the world such as in America during 1950s

However it was unique to South africa and is different from segregation because it is an actual law and was legally and politically enforced by the national party which had came to power in 1948
