Open pit mines are used to bring out minerals such as coal that lie beneath the earth surface at moderate depth. Underground mine shafts are used to bring out minerals such as petroleum and natural gas that lie deep beneath. Quarry is used to bring out minerals such as limestone that lie just beneath.
