The solutions made by dissolving various solutes in water are called aqueous solutions. For example a solution of salt in water is an aqueous solution.

The solutions made by dissolving solutes in organic liquids or solvents which do not contain water are called non-aqueous solutions. For example benzene, ether are non-aqueous solvents.
