To explain this , first i want you to tell the four main types of welding,

1.Gas metal arc welding,

2.Tungsten inert gas welding

3.Shielded metal arc welding and

4.Gas welding

Gas metal arc welding(GMAW)( metal active gas welding - MAG) uses an active gas suc(such) as carbon dioxide and mixture of both carbon dioxide and argon called as ACM to form a shielding layer around the welding.

The second type,Tungsten inert gas welding(GTAW) uses argon( or helium, some times nitrogen) as a shielding gas which is used mostly in autogenous weld(welding in which the edges of the material are melt to form a welding) and thereby this process is expensive beacuse of the use of Argon.

Now,the Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) does not use an external shielding gas and the weld pool is protected by a flux electrode which forms a shielding when the arc is struck between the metals.
