Bassanio is romantic, sensetive, and terrible with money. It is he who sets the play into action, borrowing money from Antonio (the merchant) to pursue the heart of his love, Portia.
Gratiano on the other hand, is blustery, coarse, crude, and probably the most Anti-Semitic, gulling Shylock in the trial scene and ending the play with a double entendre.
