In chemical terms, a residue can be defined as any substance which remains behind after a process, say evaporation, filtration or decantation.

When you filter some suspension or a liquid containing some solid precipitates, the liquid that passes through the filter paper and pours down into the lower vessel is known as "filtrate".

hope it will help!☺️
