Gangue: The earthly and silicious impurities are associated with the ores are called gangue.

Slag: A slag is an easily  fusible material which is formed when gangue still present in the roasted or the calcined ore combines with the flux.

Example; In the metallurgy of iron, CaO (flux) combines with the silica gangue to form easily fusible calcium silicate (CaSiO_{\\3}) slag

  •                  CaO+SiO_{2} ----->CaSiO_{3} (slag)
