Water from public taps normally come from reservoirs or other water bodies, which are stored in water tanks for distribution. They are generally filtered and then treated with a common disinfectant like chlorine. Hence such water will have the faint smell and taste of chlorine. They are available at the twist of a tap.
Water from a village well has to be drawn, using a pulley and bucket, and is usually pure.
