Hydrophobic is a condition that means a substance does not mix/dissolve in water- these substances are non-polar and do not have a charge, water on the other hand has a charge and are only able to interact with substances that have charged particles. Hydrophilic is the opposite and describes a condition where substances are ' water loving' and are able to interact with water and dissolve in water- these substances are polar and therefore contain charged particles
