Before going to know about the infectious diseases , you need to know what are Aquired diseases :

\underline{\textbf{Aquired Diseases:}} The diseases which develop after the birth of an organism are called acquired diseases . Acquired diseases can be classified into two types :

★ Communicable or Infectious Diseases .

★ Non-Communicable or Non-Infectious Diseases .

\underline{\textbf{Infectious Diseases:}} The diseases which are caused by some biological agents or pathogens such as viruses , bacteria , protozoans , nematodes , helminthes and some fungi . Infectious diseases can rapidly spread from one person to another by various means , such as : water , air , physical contact , food , vectors ( insects ) . Since , these diseases are communicated from diseased person to healthy person , they are known as infectious diseases .

\underline{\textbf{Non-Infectious Diseases:}} The diseases which occur to some organical or metabolical matters are called non-infectious diseases . These diseases are restricted to only those people who are suffering from them . These are not spread from an infected person to a healthy person . These diseases may be caused from :

1. Lack of certain essential nutrients in our diet (deficiency diseases ) ;

2. Degeneration of tissues in old age ; ( degenerative diseases ) ;

3. Uncontrolled growth of tissues in any part of the body ( cancer ) ;

4. Defects in metabolic reactions ( metabolic disorders ) ;

5. Injury in any part of the body by accidents .

\underline{\textbf{Differences between Infectious and non-infectious diseases:}}

1. Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens ; Non infectious diseases are caused by factors other than pathogens .

2. The Infectious diseases are brought by extrinsic factors ; Non infectious diseases are mostly caused by intrinsic factors .

3. Infectious diseases can spread from the infected person to healthy persons ; Non infectious diseases cannot spread from one person to another.

4. In infectious diseases transmission of infection occurs through direct contact or some medium ; In non infectious diseases , transmission is absent (except hereditary diseases).
